Vows one-month war on corruption

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has vowed to eradicate corruption within his first month in office if elected president in 2027 — pledging to resign if he fails.

Speaking during an X Space session, titled: ‘Weekend Politics’, Amaechi unveiled sweeping reform plans, including constitutional changes to replace Nigeria’s current indigeneship system with universal citizenship rights. He also promised to retain the removal of fuel subsidies but redirect the savings to directly benefit ordinary Nigerians rather than the elite.

“If I do not end corruption in Nigeria within one month, I will tender my resignation”, Amaechi declared, accusing influential figures of routinely plundering the Central Bank of Nigeria. He said the recovered funds could address pressing security and economic challenges.

The All-Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain also took aim at key political figures, describing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu as the “worst” in Nigeria’s history for alleged electoral mismanagement.

Amaechi, who is seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), didn’t spare the current administration, claiming President Bola Tinubu’s government has “damaged Nigeria”. He criticised Tinubu’s decision to run on a Muslim-Muslim ticket, arguing that the president should have made sacrifices for national unity if he truly loved the country.

“Tinubu’s presidency has damaged Nigeria a lot. He brought Muslim-Muslim ticket. He should have made the sacrifice of not even running if he loves Nigeria”, Amaechi said. “The only way he could have run is to bring something unique to the table, but what he’s bringing is what anybody could have brought”.

The former Rivers state governor also threw down a political challenge to current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, daring him to walk the streets of Port-Harcourt “to see who commands greater public support”.

Reflecting on his political career, Amaechi recalled becoming Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly at age 32, and serving for eight years without impeachment — a record he cites as proof of his leadership stability.

Amaechi promised sweeping constitutional reforms, scrapping indigeneship in favour of citizenship rights, and vowed fuel subsidy savings would “go directly to the people, not the pockets of a few”.
